Today I walked around town. KL is loud, filthy, and stinks. KL is full of energy, a bustling metropolis. I love it, at least for the time being.
I tried to buy Lat's "The Kampung Boy" but it is sold out. Lat is a Malaysian cartoonist who grew up near where I was born. His comics give a humorous insight into (rural) Malaysian life. I had previously tried to order it from the U.S. but to the cost of the book (4 US$) and the cost of shipping (15 US$), the web-store added a raging 250 US$ "export tax" so that I had to decline "this offer". And now the publisher has gone bankrupt. Anyone who has a spare copy please let me know! (*)
KL is a shopping and bargaining paradise. I can buy a Boss suit for 500 Euro. Or I can haggle (in the right places). In Europe, I can buy a Ralph Lauren Polo Shirt for 60 Euro, in the U.S. I can buy it for 30 US$, and in KL I can buy it for 5 Euro, all in official Ralph Lauren stores. Of course, I can buy the same (looking) shirt for 2 Euro (or less) on the night market. Yeah, right. I can buy "Gucci bags", "Versace sunglasses", and "Montblanc pens" all for a few bucks on the night market...
A Spiderman or Star Wars, Episode 2, DVD costs 2 US$ each. Any takers?
