Today is my last day in the Bay Area. Well, I'll shortly return to Menlo Park after a one-week trip to OOPSLA 2004, taking place once again in beautiful Vancouver, B.C. But after that it is goodbye Menlo Park, goodbye Silicon Valley. At least for now...

Yesterday, I brought in my stuff to an export service, where I waited in this desolate waiting room for the main guy to appear. I almost walked out backwards when I saw this room, but the company and the manager turned out to be friendly and professional.

After moving boxes around for most of the day, I was happy to retire to an early Geek Abend at the Palo Alto Gordon Biersch. As you can gather from the picture, I got a good preparation of what's to come once I get settled in Germany. We had a good chunk of "Festbier".

Today, I had a final enjoyable day at "the cottage", my beautiful home for the summer of 2004 in Menlo Park. Below, you can get a glimpse of just how beautiful it was. But it really is only a glimpse as you don't really see the garden and its fruit trees, or the hammock under the shade spending trees, or the palm tree, or much of the house itself.

A glimpse of "the cottage" and parts of its garden---I will miss it

After ten years of living abroad, I'm finally returning to Germany. From Hamburg, my home town, I moved to Zurich, lived there for five years, passed through Mannheim for a few months, moved on to Boston, where I lived for 2.5 years, went back to Berlin for a few months, and finally moved to Stanford and the Silicon Valley, where I lived for another total of 2.5 years.

Goodbye, Bay Area!
