On August 16, Friedrich Merz, member of the German parliament, member of the CDU Präsidium, and leading politician on financial and economic matters, visited Stanford. Invited by the Stanford German Student Association he spoke to a full house about the competitiveness of the German economy, its strengths and weaknesses, and the on-going reform efforts in Germany.
Friedrich Merz addressing the German community
Mr. Merz's presentation was well received. Audience members hailed to Stanford from all over the area, including the Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and Berkeley. The question and answer session went way over time, and even after the official part of the presentation and discussion had ended, participants kept asking questions and discussing political matters with Mr. Merz.
Mr. Merz and the SGSA board and friends
After the talk, the board of the Stanford German Student Association had dinner with Mr. Merz and his daughter at a local restaurant, where we kept discussing German policy matters and their relationship to the U.S.
We would like to thank Mr. Merz for taking the time to visit Stanford and speak to the German community.
