After a series of hotels with non-working telephones, cold showers, and lots of animals I don't want to talk about I checked in into a bland but well-run hotel in Penang. What a relieve! The hotel may not be exciting, but at least it worked. Yet, nothing is perfect. While at Nusa Camp, Veronica and Marcus shared their room with a gecko that they named Rudolf. Guess what I'm sharing my room with... It's probably not Rudolf, but a close relative. The main difference to Veronica and Marcus' room is that my current room lies on the 11th floor of a modern hotel building.

Fortunately, geckos are harmless. Actually, in the jungle, they are your friend, because they eat mosquitos.

However, the hotel brought back to my mind the advantages of modern ameneties just in time to give me a hint for my upcoming beach vacation. I guess I'll choose a reasonable hotel over a funky Malay beach house...

Penang is another grotto-esque city with lots of Chinese Malaysians and a Little India. It may not be Kuala Lumpur, but at least I'm back in Starbucks land.

I'm getting tired of cities. Time to hit the beaches! (Soon...)
