Life used to be so easy.

As an engineer, professional clothing was Jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers. With it, you were impeccably dressed for an interview at any high-tech company (that wasn't IBM or Wallstreet).

When interviewing with a big corporation for a marketing position, you obviously had to wear a suit.

But what do you do if you are interviewing with a hot but relaxed startup in Silicon Valley, for a product management position? So I asked the secretary for dress code, and she said: "Go casual but formal."

Wow. I think I spent an hour in front of my closet trying to figure out what casual but formal might mean. In the end I hit it right on, but trust me, the old days were simpler.
